How To Become A Transcriptionist And Make Money Online Working AS a Voiceover

The trend or maybe the need for online and at home jobs is only going up day by day. However, not all jobs can be done from home. Only a set of jobs that depend mostly on PC and the internet can only be done from home. Today in this article I am going to discuss and help you with one such work from home job that you can do online.

You would think that with the advancement in technology, transcribers would no longer be in high demand. But it is likely that there will always be a “middle man” (transcriptionist) needed to fill this hole. Online transcription jobs are still plenty and can help you earn a decent amount of money from home.

What Is Transcription

Online transcription is the process of listening to audio files and transcribing (or writing/typing) them to text exactly as heard. This can be difficult for those who are not fast at typing or who are not great at listening. So you typically do need both of these skills to transcribe (or do you?).

Don’t forget that I have one crazy tip for online transcription. In fact, I’m using it right now and let me tell you it makes my life so much easier. It also makes transcribing amazingly simple – though still something that needs to be learned properly.

Skill Required for Transcription Jobs

Skills are the primary ones that you need to check before you think of starting your career in transcription. Because mere attention cannot make you a successful transcriber. There is more that you need to invest in. The skill requirements are as follows:

  • Good listening skills

  • Typing skills

  • Communication skills

  • Command over spellings, punctuation, and grammar

  • Confidentiality

  • Accuracy

  • Ability to work quickly

  • Computer knowledge

How Much Money Online Transcription Jobs Does Pay?

Well, before looking into the hourly pay rates, let’s discuss how transcriptionists are get paid. They get paid “Per Audio Hour” but not “Per Hour”. Completing typing an hour-long audio file/files is what an Audio Hour means. And on average, they pay $60 – $75 per audio hour.

According to GMR Transcription, an average person takes 4 hours to transcribe hour-long audio files (Audio Hour) while an experienced transcriptionist takes half of that time to finish.

So, by converting those numbers into hourly pay rates, we may expect $15+ per hour for beginners and moderate level transcriptionists and up to $30 per hour for advanced transcriptionists.

With these rates, one can earn $1500 per month working 2-3 hours daily, or if you work full-time, it would get you around $4000+ per month.

We sorted the list out to include companies that are open to hiring anybody around the world. That includes you and me from a third world country (Holla!!!!) Payments are usually through Paypal, so make sure to have one set up with your real name. (Because if you don’t, it may be a hassle to present proper identification when withdrawing your money). So, just a heads up.
